Ponte Vedra Beach is a beautiful seaside community on the Atlantic Ocean. One of Northeast Florida's premiere resorts as well as a flourishing residential community.
Ponte Vedra originally called Mineral City back in the 1900's served as a mining venture that produced titanium, rutile and zircon for the government in WWI. In 1922, the National Lead Company bought the property with the mining operation and by 1928, because of the end of the war and cheaper sources of minerals, production slowed to a standstill. However, National Lead Company had built a log club house, a golf course and a polo field for its employees. The Telfair Stockton Company was hired to manage the property and immediately started developing the land. Roads were built, dredging began on the lagoons, and the age of resort living had begun. This was the beginning of the now famous Ponte Vedra Inn and Club.
In 1942 Telfair Stockton bought most of Ponte Vedra for the price one oceanfront lot would cost in today’s market. The Ponte Vedra Club grew comfortably during the 1950's and 60’s under the management Telfair’s son, James Stockton, Sr.
In 1966 James Stockton, Jr. started Stockton Land Corporation and in 1972 began developing the now world famous Sawgrass Country Club. He had a vision of building a quiet, serene recreational club complex close to nature, with the finest amenities for its membership.
The roots of Ponte Vedra Beach are deeply embedded in the Stockton family history along with much of northeast Florida. The rich history and pristine natural resources have shaped this beautiful ocean community. Ponte Vedra Beach is a true mixture of residents, professional singles and families working in the city, retired couples enjoying world class recreational facilities and owners of second homes.
